Who is Francesco Petrarch?
Francesco Petrarch was born on July 20, 1304 in Tuscan, Italy and died on July 19, 1374 at the age of 69. Petrarch studied law at the University of Montpellier although he was more interested in writing and Latin Literature than law. Petrarch is known best for his Italian poetry works.
He is often labeled as "The Father of Humanism" because he was said to have started the movement. He was the first to propose a collection of intellectual thinkings of classical culture and Christian philosophy. In one of his works, Secretum meum, he discusses the fact that worldly achievements do not prevent a relationship with God. Petrarch, being a devoted Catholic, did not perceive a conflict between individual accomplishments and a person's relationship with God. That idea is the basis of humanism.
