William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. His birthday is celebrated on April 23, 1564, as it is three days before his baptism. April 23rd is also the date of his death, although in 1616.William was the third of eight Shakespeare children, three of whom died in childhood. At the age of 18, Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway. They had three children: Susan in 1583 and twins Hamnet and Judith in 1585. Hamnet, Shakespeare's only son, died at age 11.
The time between his twins' birth and 1592 is considered Shakespeare's "lost years" as there are no records of him between these times. Nevertheless, historians believe that Shakespeare spent his time as a school teacher, studying law, or perhaps traveling across Europe in an acting troupe. But by 1592, Shakespeare had begun working as an actor and had written several plays.
In 1594, Shakespeare had begun writing and acting for a theatre troupe called the Lord Chamberlain's Men, and later became its house playwright. In 1599, Shakespeare and other members of the Lord Chamberlain's Men established the Globe theatre (shown in the upper left).
On April 23, 1616 Shakespeare died at the age of 52 of unknown causes. On his gravestone it is written (some believe by Shakespeare himself) "Blessed be the man that spares these stones, / And cursed be he that moves my bones."
